The ‘First-Contact Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Risk Management Training’, was organized by Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board (RSPHCMB) in collaboration with Kay Hector Consulting Limited on the 1st December, 2022.
The main objective of this training was to develop the capacity of Primary Health Workers to be able to recognize the risk factors of CVD and initiate basic prevention, early diagnosis and prompt treatment strategies.
Fifty (50) health workers were trained including Doctors, Nurses and Community Health Workers. The training focused on relearning basic facts about CVD, its pathophysiology, risk factors, early warning signs, management and conditions for referrals.
There were practical sessions that bothered on an in-depth review of the entire consultation process to identify patients with low, intermediate or high risk of developing heart attack or stroke in the next 10 years using the QRisk3 score.
The PHC workforce is being re-equipped with the right skills on prevention and management of key non-communicable diseases in urban and rural communities in the State.
