On the 24th of July, 2024, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr Adaeze Oreh launched the Primary Health Care Basic Obstetric Imaging Services. This point-of-care initiative is designed to assess maternal and foetal well-being during pregnancy and reduce feto-maternal morbidities and mortalities through early detection of high-risk pregnancies for prompt referral. The main aim of this service is to improve the quality of Ante Natal Care offered in the Primary Health Centres in line with the vision of the Executive Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara GSSRS.
Basic Obstetric Imaging is a safe non-invasive procedure that is recommended at all stages of pregnancy
Twenty (20) Medical Doctors were re-trained to commence point-of-care obstetric imaging in designated Primary Health Centres across the State. The cost of this service has been subsidized by the Rivers State Government and this intervention will be scaled up to include more Primary Health Centres.
The Honourable Commissioner for Health, the Board of Trustees, the Executive Secretary Prof Kinikanwo Green, the Directors of the RSPHCMB, Health workers, dignitaries from various Local Government Areas and pregnant women, were in attendance during the launch of the Basic Obstetrics Imagining Services which took place during the flag-off of the Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week. In her remark, the Honourable Commissioner for Health reiterated the importance of Primary Health Care Basic Obstetric Imaging and the need to bring these services closer to the people.
The highlight of the launch was the pronouncement of free Obstetric scans for pregnant women throughout the Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week.
